A sometimes a cave is just a tiny, wet, beautiful, perfectly rounded, good-looking hole with nothing interesting. (Besides being a hole). Sometimes it's a massive abyss with dangerous creatures and bones of unfortunate wastelanders. Yet sometimes its a huge randomly generated dungeon with, traps, containers and various nests of creatures.

This page is not about any of cases described above though. During your journey, rarely, perhaps once in your short, sad life, you might get dragged in a encounter described as: "A cave in the mountains". On the surface all you can find is cave entrance. So lets go "inside".

Firstly you will see 3 graves, there's Assault Rifle and Shovel near them. Pick them up. Try to use Shovel on the graves. It turns out after using it you will be able to loot graves. Even gaining you the perk "Grave Digger" losing 50 karma each time. You heartless bastard. The first one had nothing inside, second just some caps and third nothing as well as first. Assault Rifle, 59 Caps and a Shovel doesn't seems like a lot for special encounter right? Hah! Take a closer look - you will notice a hidden passage leading further into cave, there you will be attacked by 3 angry assholes-- molerats. An Assault Rifle that you just found might come in handy right? Unless you have no SG skills.

If you're out of ammunition for rifle, try to rush though the molerats to get to the bones container. In that bones you will find some armor, multiple stimpaks and ammunition to fight off that evil rats. After defeating your rat archenemies go further - to a well hidden room that looks like some kind of shelter or underground storage. One of containers is protected by pretty strong lock. The important treasure here is a map to the Shelter base but you might not be able to open it unless your lockpick is high enough.

Nope, surface is boring, there is nothing here but entrance.

Inside

(The spawn noted here should serve as explanatory list as content of this place is probably very random. Each time a wastelander finds this place a different batch of loots awaits for him, except for bones container which is always the same and except the fact that you will always find Shelter base map here.)

• c1 - Bones with always the same loot, inside you will find: 1x Plastic Explosives, 1x Lockpicks, 1x Cigarettes, 1x Metal Armor, 4x Stimpaks, 87x 5mm AP
• c2 - Container with random loot. The outdoormsan book often spawns here.
• c3 - Container with random loot for example: 87x 5mm AP.
• c4 - Container with random loot for example: 1x Leather Jacket, 1x Crowbar, 1x Tools, 73x Bottle Caps, 1x Junk, 3x "Cat's Paw", 1x Water Flask, 1x Rope.
• L1 - Container(protected by a lock) with random loot: Some rad-x and stuff like this seems to be spawning here.
• L2 - Container(protected by a lock) with random loot: The Map to Shelter always spawns on this one.

Trivia

• Lockpick skill on 50% + Equiping a lockpick set that you always find in this location is enough to break to container with shelter map.

• This encounter while certainly easy for any high leveled character is also doable even for fresh, low level, blacksuit character. When you do hit it here's a plan which you should follow:
  

A) - Grab the Assault Rifle.
B) - Run past rats to the bones container loot all from it.
C) - Run inside the bunker to some good defensive place.
D) - Equip Metal Armor, heal up using stimpaks, equip Assault Rifle and set it to burst mode.

You will be able to kill molerats even with very weak small guns skills as they not that hard to hit, especially on 1-hex distance.
